As we are now 13 years removed from the horrible tragedies of September 11, 2001, we are closing in on soon being a generation away from those events. But what happened on 9-11 is something that our future generations cannot be allowed to forget. It simply is not acceptable.
As a legislator, one of the things I can do to help is to make sure that we never forget about Patriot Day (September 11) in Ohio.
I introduced HB 606 and a concurrent resolution commemorating Patriot Week for the State of Ohio. This is currently sitting in the Rules & Reference committee, but should move out in the next week or two.
To designate the week including September 11 and September 17 each year as Patriot Week to encourage Ohioans to renew their appreciation of and reverence for the United States.
Whereas, Focus on the founding principles and shared history of the United States will renew the spirit of its people; and
Whereas, Celebration of the founding fathers and other patriots of the United States will exalt its people; and
Whereas, Reverence for documents vital to the creation of the United States will encourage its people; and
Whereas, Remembrance of influential speeches that helped to mold the United States will inspire its people; and
Whereas, Recognizing flags of United States history that signify principles and values dear to the United States will motivate its people; and
Whereas, The anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11 and the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States on September 17 remind us that the founding principles of this nation will always and forever be relevant to its people, and will serve as the anchors of Patriot Week; now therefore be it
Resolved, That the General Assembly designates the week including September 11 and September 17 each year as Patriot Week to encourage Ohioans to renew their appreciation of and reverence for the United States; and be it further
Resolved, That the General Assembly, encourages public and private entities in this state to recognize and participate in Patriot Week; and be it further
Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the Governor and to the news media of Ohio.
I encourage teachers, parents, neighbors and friends to make sure that we help people who are too young to even know about 9-11 to learn about the events that day at an age-appropriate level. And, we all must never forget -- especially as we continue the war on terror internationally and fight every day for a safe homeland. The forces of evil are alive and well in the world, and through Patriot Week and recognition of those who lost their lives, we must never forget.
